Rath Yatra: The Divine Chariot Festival of Lord Jagannath. Every year, millions of devotees gather across India and the world to witness the magnificent celebration of Rath Yatra, also known as the Festival of Chariots.
Historical Roots of Rath Yatra
Rath Yatra has its origins in Puri, Odisha, where the famous Jagannath Temple resides. The earliest written reference dates back to the 12th century, although the worship of Lord Jagannath is believed to be much older. The tradition was institutionalized by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, who commissioned the construction of the present-day temple.Jagannath, a form of Lord Krishna (an avatar of Vishnu), is worshipped alongside his siblings — Balabhadra (Balarama) and Subhadra. The festival is a celebration of the time when Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings, goes on an annual visit to his aunt’s home — the Gundicha Temple, located about 3 kilometers away
