The Indian film industry mourns the loss of one of its most iconic and versatile actors, Kota Srinivasa Rao, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 83. He breathed his last at his residence in Filmnagar, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, following a prolonged illness related to age and health complications. His demise marks the end of an era in Telugu cinema, leaving behind a legacy that spans over four decades and more than 750 films across multiple languages.
A Career Etched in Cinematic Brilliance
Born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu, Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, Kota Srinivasa Rao began his artistic journey in theatre before transitioning to films. His debut came in 1978 with the film Pranam Khareedu, which also marked the beginning of Megastar Chiranjeevi’s career. From there, Rao carved a niche for himself as a master of character roles, seamlessly portraying villains, comedians, and emotionally complex figures with equal finesse.
His filmography includes landmark titles such as Siva, Gaayam, Money, Bommarillu, Athadu, Rakta Charitra, Leader, and Attarintiki Daredi. He was last seen in the Kannada film Kabzaa and is set to make a posthumous appearance in Pawan Kalyan’s upcoming historical drama Hari Hara Veera Mallu.
Honors and Recognition
Beyond the silver screen, Rao also served the public as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Vijayawada East between 1999 and 2004, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His political career was marked by the same integrity and dedication that defined his cinematic journey.
The news of his passing sent shockwaves through the film fraternity and political circles alike. Chiranjeevi, his longtime colleague, expressed deep sorrow, calling Rao a “multifaceted genius” and reminiscing about their shared debut. “Every role he played was performed with such brilliance that it felt only he could do it justice,” Chiranjeevi wrote.
Jr NTR paid tribute, saying, “Kota Srinivasa Rao garu… that name is enough. Unparalleled acting prowess. A great actor who breathed life into every role with his unique style”.
Ravi Teja, who worked with Rao in films like Idiot and Kick, said, “Kota Babai was like family to me. I cherish the lovely memories of working with him”.
Ram Gopal Varma, who cast Rao in several of his films including Shiva, Sarkar, and Raktacharitra, stated, “You might have gone, but your characters will live forever”.
Vishnu Manchu, Mohan Babu, and Genelia D’Souza also shared heartfelt messages, highlighting Rao’s unmatched talent and the warmth he brought to every set.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu called Rao’s death “an irreparable loss to the Telugu film industry,” praising his artistic contributions and public service. Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan remembered acting alongside Rao in several films and described him as a “symbol of versatile acting”.
YSR Congress Party President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and BJP State President P.V.N. Madhav also expressed their condolences, acknowledging Rao’s impact both as an actor and a politician.
The last rites were performed at Maha Prasthanam in Jubilee Hills, with a sea of admirers, colleagues, and dignitaries in attendance. Veteran actors Brahmanandam and Babu Mohan were seen breaking down, recalling their long-standing friendship and collaborations with Rao.
Legacy That Transcends Generations
Kota Srinivasa Rao’s contribution to Indian cinema is immeasurable. His ability to transform even the smallest role into a memorable performance made him a favorite among directors and audiences alike. Whether it was his chilling portrayal of a villain, his comic timing, or his emotionally resonant character roles, Rao’s artistry elevated every film he touched.
His command over the Telugu language and its dialects, his expressive voice, and his theatrical roots gave him a unique edge that few could match. He filled the void left by legends like S.V. Ranga Rao, Kaikala Satyanarayana, and Rao Gopal Rao, becoming a pillar of Telugu cinema.
As fans await his final appearance in Hari Hara Veera Mallu, the film industry prepares to celebrate his life and legacy. The movie, set against the backdrop of Mughal India, will feature Rao in a pivotal role, offering one last glimpse of his brilliance on screen.
Kota Srinivasa Rao is survived by his wife Rukmini and two daughters. His son, Kota Prasad Rao, tragically passed away in a road accident in 2010. The family has requested privacy as they grieve the loss of a beloved husband, father, and artist.
Kota Srinivasa Rao was more than an actor—he was a storyteller, a mentor, a public servant, and a cultural icon. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations of actors, filmmakers, and audiences.
Rest in peace, sir. You will be missed. You will be remembered. Always.
